About the Yahrzeit

When is it observed?

On the anniversary of the Hebrew date of passing. Because the Hebrew calendar follows the moon, the corresponding Gregorian date shifts each year — usually by 10–11 days.

What customs are kept?

Lighting a 24-hour yahrzeit candle the evening before, attending shul to recite the Mourner's Kaddish, learning Mishna or giving tzedakah in the loved one's memory.

Sunset matters

If the passing was after sunset, the Hebrew day was already the next date. Most families know their loved one's yahrzeit date from the first year — the calculator above is best treated as a starting point.
